We’ll depart Our Lady of Life Apartments this morning and make our way toward Hermann, MO for an Old-fashioned German Christmas. We’ll begin our day with a tour of Hermann with our step-on guide. Along the way we’ll stop at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. Perched on one of the highest hills in the village. Overlooking the Missouri River, St. Paul’s had its beginnings in 1841. Our guide will give us all the details about the church today and its history. Be sure to note the stained glass windows which were made in Germany. From there we’ll travel on to St. George Catholic Church. Organized in 1840, the church has a longstanding history. The sanctuary is enhanced by hand-carved wooden altars and gold leaf designs on the ceiling. At both churches our guide will either be the pastor or a member of the congregation, so we’re sure to get the perfect tour.
Our tour ends at the Stone Hill Winery where we will all enjoy lunch. And at which time we will be greeted by an extra special Hermann native, Pelze Nichol. In northern Germany, the Christmas Man, or as he was otherwise known, Pelze Nichol was a sometimes unfriendly sort. But that’s not true today, as our special “Santa” delights us with songs and witty tales of days gone by. Enjoy your lunch and your visit with Pelze Nichol.
We’ll enjoy a wine taste after lunch here at Stone Hill. They offer some of Missouri’s best wines, so take time to sip a few. Plenty of time will be allowed at the gift shop as well. Perhaps to buy that perfect Christmas gift or to take home one of the wines or sparkling grape juices tasted today.
