VICKI LAWRENCE AND MAMA – THELMA HARPER
We’ll depart our pick-up point and head north to Effingham, IL. It’s the brand new Rosebud Theater that will host us for this evening . The theater is bringing a variety of performers to the Midwest and we are fortunate to be close enough to take advantage of it!
Upon arrival in Effingham we’ll be visiting the Cross USA. You may have noticed the 198-foot Cross structure as you have been driving along I-70 & 57. Enjoy a film about the making of the Cross and visit the grounds surrounding it today. The groundwork for the dedication service began in the early summer of 2001 and was planned to be on the darkest night of mid-September, the evening before the new moon. The events of September 11 in New York City, Washington, D.C. and rural Pennsylvania brought forth an even more somber, darker night throughout our nation and in central Illinois. As the lights were turned on and the illuminated Cross at the Crossroads broke the darkness, there was a sense of joy, relief and hope for the throng gathered at the base of the Cross.
Then it’s on to one of Effingham’s favorite restaurants for a delicious dinner. Enjoy a variety of entrées and salads along with your favorite vegetables. Be sure to save room for dessert!
Next the event of the evening! It’s Vicki Lawrence, the girl voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by her graduating class, and she certainly has! The first half of her show is a mixture of stand-up comedy, music and observations about real life. Then the second half of the show brings on, “Thelma Harper” as Mama, the frumpy, speak-my-mind senior citizen with a penchant for sensible shoes, floral dresses and hats, and popping the top on a cold brew. You’ll get a kick out of what Mama has an opinion about. There’s really nothing that she doesn’t know or nothing she can’t do!
