Depart Pick-up Point —Early Morning
We’ll depart our pick-up point early this morning and travel to Alton, IL where we’ll board the Amtrak train for Springfield, IL to enjoy a “new look” at an old favorite. Today we’ll explore the city and home of the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. Upon arrival, we’ll meet our step-on guide for the day and begin our explorations of Springfield.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum covers a three-block area in downtown Springfield. Today our emphasis is on the multi-level museum which consists of approximately 35,000 square feet of exhibit space and the Grand Plaza as well. It features “The Journey” through Lincoln’s life from his boyhood log cabin through the Presidency and his unfortunate assassination. Forensic science has been used to examine what Lincoln might have looked like as a boy, and lavish attention was paid to exacting historical detail. Another outstanding element of the museum is the Union Theater spotlighting “Lincoln’s Eyes,” a three-screen surround illusion where Lincoln’s life and legacy are featured from the viewpoints of supporters and detractors. A Halovision theater highlights the “Ghosts of the Library” featuring live actors with special effects in three-dimensional space. Abraham Lincoln’s definitive moment in American history is prominently felt and displayed at the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Today we will experience the honest world of Abraham Lincoln.
A delicious buffet Lunch is included at the Chesapeake Seafood House. From there we’ll travel to the First Presbyterian Church for a look at the Tiffany Windows and then it’s on to the tomb of Abraham Lincoln in Oak Ridge Cemetery
We’ll depart Springfield now and head for home.
