EXPLORING THE CIVIL WAR IN ST. LOUIS THROUGH THE EYES OF LEE AND GRANT

                                                                              JULY 16, 2008

We’ll travel to the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park and meet our guide Barnes Bradshaw for a Civil War tour of the city of St. Louis.  While St. Louis is not on the list of famous Civil War battle sites, it and the surrounding region had its share of agonies in the War Between the States.

Split by opposing loyalties and sympathies, the area’s citizens fought among themselves over the issues that exploded into war.  Our tour today focuses on the events that took place in and around the City of St. Louis with site visits and stories about Nathaniel Lyon and the Camp Jackson Massacre, the infamous Gratiot Street Prison, the Old Courthouse, the St. Louis Arsenal and other sites associated with this troubled and turbulent time.

Our guide, a native St. Louisan and Special Events Coordinator for the Missouri History Museum, is thoroughly versed in the history of this place and time.  Barnes has an empathy and an enthusiasm that you will find mesmerizing as you explore with him the twists and turns of a divided city, its joys and sorrows, its moments of victory, and  the agonizing pains of loss and struggle.

Once we return to the History Museum from our Civil War History tour, we’ll enjoy a wonderful lunch at
Meriwether’s Restaurant in the History Museum.

After lunch we’ll explore the Missouri History Museum’s special exhibit, Lee and Grant. During our docent led tour see over 200 artifacts of the two generals.  Hear about Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, their similarities as well as the conflicting values of the two men. Hear about the place each of these men took in American History and the importance of each of them.

Take time to explore any of the remaining galleries that you desire.
We’ll return to our departure location late this afternoon.
