SUNDAY, MAY 18 (D)
It’s an early evening arrival in the Detroit area. Check into our hotel upon arrival. Relax a bit and refresh. Then what a way to begin our tour of the Auto Baron Capital of the world! It’s an interactive dinner at the hotel, buffet style with “Henry Ford” and his friends. In attendance will be, “Harvey Firestone” and “Thomas Edison”. Enjoy this delicious dinner and fun-filled evening!
MONDAY, MAY 19 (B-D)
Wake up to a full breakfast buffet this morning at the hotel then it’s off to Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum. A myriad of exhibits await you as you stroll the aisles and aisles of automobiles and memorabilia found here at the museum. It began as one man’s vision to document the genius of ordinary people, by preserving the objects they used in the course of their everyday lives. Greenfield Village houses historic buildings, see the past come alive as you walk the streets of the village. Your choice for which venue you visit.
Travel next to Frankenmuth, Michigan and a visit to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the largest retail Christmas store in the world! In town, view the 35-bell automatic carillon in the Bavarian Inn’s Glockenspiel Tower. It plays three melodies followed by a presentation of carved wooden figures depicting the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. We’ll check into our hotel late this afternoon. After a chance to stroll the shops downtown or take a walk through RiverPlace—featuring 30 boutiques, tonight it’s the Chicken Dinner that made Frankenmuth famous! There’s a light show at dusk that you won’t want to miss as well!
TUESDAY, MAY 20 (CB-D)
Enjoy a Continental Breakfast at the hotel and then we depart for Mackinaw City. Enjoy the shops here and have lunch on your own. Then it’s the what you’ve been waiting for…..a step back in time….where the only mode of transportation is by horse, bicycle or on foot………...MACKINAC ISLAND! We’ll ferry over to the island and upon arrival meet your horse drawn Mackinac Island Carriage. Enjoy a 90-minute narrated tour of the island which ends at the historic Grand Hotel. Check into the hotel and get acquainted! There’s no place quite like it, and the experience cannot be duplicated. The Grand Hotel opened in 1887 on an island without cars, where horses and bicycles are still the favored modes of transportation. It’s the slower, more leisurely pace of the past, but with all the amenities of the present. Have dinner at the hotel tonight—a fabulous 5-course gourmet meal with your choice of selections upon seating. Dress code for all areas of the hotel after 6pm are men in jackets and ties, and ladies in dressy pantsuits. Enjoy the entertainment after dinner - dancing with a live orchestra, movie showing, or Demitasse in the parlor.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 21 (B-D)
Your luggage should be out by 9am this morning then it’s off to Breakfast off the menu at the hotel. Free time for shopping or relaxing follows. We’ll head to Fort Mackinac for a tour there this morning – where history comes alive! Then we’ll “taxi” back to the Grand Hotel for the sumptuous Luncheon Buffet. After lunch walk down the hill and into town for the ferry to the Mainland. In Mackinaw City, meet your coach and depart for Traverse City, via the charming towns of Petoskey and Charlevoix along the shoreline. We’ll check into our hotel in Traverse City, meet your step-on-guide for a late afternoon tour of Old Mission Peninsula. Dinner is a Very Cherry Buffet back at the hotel upon your return.
THURSDAY, MAY 22 (CB-D)
A continental breakfast is enjoyed at the hotel before we depart for Grand Rapids. Upon arrival, we’ll tour the Fredrik Meijers Garden and Sculpture Park, including a guided tram tour of the gardens. The Gardens is a mixture of sculpture and nature beautifully combined, featuring plants for around the world, nature trails, and scenic waterfalls, as well as Michigan’s largest tropical conservatory. Standing among this is over 100 sculptures by world-renowned artists. Also included is the 24-foot bronze Leonardo da Vinci Horse. Following our visit to the gardens, it’s off to tour the Gerald Ford Presidential Library in Grand Rapids. From uproar of Watergate, emerged Gerald Ford into the Presidency. Today you will see him as a college football player, as a family man, a Congressman and finally President. The museum provokes emotions that stimulate learning, reflection, and a sense of democratic citizenship. For visitors, the presidency is theirs to see and touch (almost), to use, and to hold accountable. Now it’s on to Holland, Michigan for our overnight stay. Dinner is included this evening.
FRIDAY, MAY 23 (CB-D)
Enjoy a Continental Breakfast at the hotel before we depart for Windmill Island. A beautiful oasis within the city of Holland, Windmill Island features a 240 year old working Dutch windmill "De Zwaan" (meaning graceful bird). The windmill towers over 36 acres of manicured gardens, dikes, canals and picnic areas. Over 150,000 tulips bloom in the spring. In the summer, annual plants and flowers decorate the ground. We welcome you to linger amid a sea of flowers. Some shopping time for that perfect pair of wooden shoes is given. Or you may want to bring home tulip bulbs to plant in your own yard. We’ll leave Holland and Michigan behind us now and begin our trip home, taking along memories of days gone by, and the beauty of a state filled with breathtaking scenery, great food, and a myriad of things to see and do.
We’ll stop for dinner enroute home (included). We should arrive home at approximately 8:00pm.
