Benny Goodman

We’ll depart the area early this afternoon and travel to Centralia, Illinois.                               Centralia was founded in 1853 by the Illinois Central Railroad’s passage through the area.  Once a booming coal mining town, today Centralia has over 60 trains passing through it on a daily basis and is a rich Illinois farm and orchard community.

                                                                                                                                     Upon arrival in this little Southern Illinois town, we’ll make our way to the Centralia Carillon which rises 150 feet over the downtown area and is the 6th largest in the world, one of only 150 in the country. 

                                                                                                                                Today you will tour the 65 bell instrument and be treated to a program of melodious tunes.  From the Carillon we’ll make a stop at the Centralia Museum.  View the rich history of the town through the vintage pictures, tools, clothing and even tour a real caboose.  Dinner is included today at the Centralia House Restaurant where you will be treated to one of the house specialties.

                                                                                                                                  Then the highlight of the day — it’s the Dave Bennett production of “A Tribute to Benny Goodman”.  We’ll attend the evening performance the world of Benny Goodman through the sounds of Dave Bennett, so good that most call him a prodigy and jaw dropping phenomena.  Set to a joyous score featuring clarinet, you’ll hear some of your favorites, like I’ve Got Rhythm, Moonglow, Goody Goody and many more!  Sure to leave you humming, tapping and smiling, we’ll leave after the concert for our return home, arriving at approximately 11:15pm.

Musically, Goodman set a whole new standard for jazz:  creating a technical virtuosity for his instrument on par with the standards of European classical music, combined with blazing swing rhythm and seemingly unending improvisational skills.  He created a unique repertoire using material from some of America’s top songwriters, often in composing collaboration and turning some of these into all-time “standards”...Moonglow, Avalon, Stompin at The Savoy, Don’t Be That Way, etc.

Michigan Clarinetist Dave Bennett is an authentic musical prodigy who brings to life the classic sound and music of Benny Goodman with incredible technique, style, beauty of tone and naturalness.
